Medical director named for gastroenterology
Sonia K. Michail, MD, has been named medical director of the gastroenterology department at Dayton Children’s. Dr. Michail has been a pediatric gastroenterologist at Dayton Children's for 11 years and acting medical director since January 2009. She brings talent, support and leadership to the department.

Dr. Michail is associate professor of pediatrics at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine and a member of the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, the American Gastroenterology Association, the Crohns and Colitis Foundation and a former local delegate of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

She and her family reside in Washington Township.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) training program recognized
Dayton Children’s has been training the health care community of local hospitals, EMS squads and surgical centers in pediatric resuscitation since 1989, providing approximately 60 courses per year and training an average of 30 people per class.  The faculty consists of 75 instructors that include nurses, doctors, paramedics and respiratory therapists.

Since children are transported to Dayton Children’s by EMS squads and other local hospitals it is vitally important for the first responders to know how to resuscitate infants, children and teens should they be in pulmonary or cardiac arrest before arriving to Dayton Children’s.

Dayton Children’s Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) training program was recently nationally recognized for their efforts.  An article titled, The Efficacy of Pediatric Advanced Life Support Training in Emergency Medical Service Providers, was published in the August edition of Pediatric Emergency Care that studied the effect of PALS training among emergency medical service (EMS) providers in out-of-hospital trauma and medical resuscitations.

Laboratory receives accreditation
Dayton Children’s laboratory was recently accredited by The College of American Pathologists. The laboratory has met all applicable standards for accreditation. The reviewers gave extremely high praise to our staff and the quality of our laboratory. The phrases “exemplary”, “outstanding”, “best I’ve ever seen” and “we’ve learned so much from you” were used throughout the exit interview.

The College of American Pathologists visits every two years to make sure health care systems are in compliance and following appropriate safety guidelines.

Echocardiography laboratory receives accreditation
Echocardiography laboratory received accreditation from the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL). Main campus, Dayton Children's Outpatient Testing Center - Beavercreek and Specialty Care Center - Warren County are now fully accredited for transthoracic and fetal echocardiography.

Accreditation recognizes Dayton Children’s echocardiography laboratory as one which is committed to quality assurance. This means doctors and their patients are receiving the most accurate diagnosis in a timely manner.
